Functions of the Committee

The information on this page relates to the committee of the 53rd Parliament, which ended with the dissolution of the Parliament on 19 February 2012.

The Community Affairs Committee was established by the Queensland Legislative Assembly on 16 June 2011.

The Committee is a bipartisan portfolio committee of the Legislative Assembly. The Committee has the responsibility for examining Appropriation Bills, other proposed legislation, and public accounts and public works within the following portfolio areas:

  • Child Safety
  • Youth Justice
  • Community Services
  • Multicultural Affairs
  • Housing
  • Women
  • Sport
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs

The committee’s portfolio areas are currently administered by the Department of Communities and its four Ministers.

The Committee may, from time to time deal with matters referred to it by the Parliament that are outside these specific areas of responsibility.

The Legislative Assembly also requires the committee to oversee two independent Commissions: the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian, and the Family Responsibilities Commission. The Committee is to monitor and review the performance of the Commissions.

The Committee is to examine the annual reports of the Commissions and report to the Legislative Assembly on any matter concerning the Commissions as well as any changes to their functions, structures or procedures, which may lead to more effective operation of the Commissions.

The Committee aims to conduct its work in a public forum where possible. Members of the public are often invited to make submissions and attend the committee’s public hearings.

For more specific detail on the Committee’s role please refer to Section 92 of the Parliament of Queensland Act 2001 and Parts 6 and 7 and Schedule 6 of the Standing Rules and Orders of the Legislative Assembly or contact the Committee’s secretariat.
