The Opening of Parliament is a significant event in Queensland’s parliamentary calendar. This most recent Opening marked the 58th occasion since 1860 that Members have gathered to begin a new term in service to those who elected them.
Following the general election, three essential steps took place before the Assembly could commence its work:
- Summons by the Governor – This officially set the time and date for the Parliament’s meeting.
- Swearing-In and Election of the Speaker – All Members were sworn in, and a Speaker was elected to lead the Assembly.
- Opening of Parliament – The Governor, as the Crown’s representative, delivered the opening speech, signifying the beginning of the new parliamentary term.
Together, these steps ensured that Members of Parliament were formally prepared to represent and serve the people of Queensland.
