Visitors with Guide, Hearing or Assistance animals
For the safety and comfort of all visitors, staff and contractors, animals are not permitted within the Parliamentary Precinct, with the following exceptions:
1. Certified guide, hearing or assistance dogs
Dogs that are trained and certified in accordance with the Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dogs Act 2009 (Qld), and accompanied by a valid identity card issued under that Act.
2. Assistance animals with a Translink Assistance Animal Pass
Animals that meet the definition of an assistance animal under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) and are accompanied by a valid Translink Assistance Animal Pass.
3. Assistance animals with prior approval
Visitors may request approval to access the Parliamentary Precinct with an assistance animal by submitting a written request to the Sergeant-at-Arms at Sergeant-at-Arms@parliament.qld.gov.au. The request must include:
- Reason for access (e.g. function, meeting)
- Confirmation the animal does not have an infectious disease / received relevant vaccinations
- Confirmation the animal is an assistance animal
- Confirmation the animal is trained to meet the standards of hygiene and behaviour that are appropriate for an animal in a public place.
Translink Assistance Animal Pass
The Translink Assistance Animal Pass is an approved pass for assistance animals. In accordance with Translink policy these passes are available to a Queensland resident who has an assistance animal if it has been trained to:
- Assist a person with a disability to alleviate the effect of the disability
- Meet standards of hygiene that are appropriate for an animal in a public place
- Meets standards of behaviour that are appropriate for an animal in a public place.
Additional Requirements
Guide dogs, hearing dogs and assistance dogs are permitted on the precinct if they are under control at all times and do not pose a threat or disturbance to others.
Animal handlers are responsible for collecting and disposing of all animal droppings.
Animals are not permitted in areas where food is prepared i.e. not permitted in kitchens but are permitted in dining areas.
A person accompanied by a certified dog must carry a valid identity card issued under the Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dogs Act 2009 (Qld).
A person accompanied by a non-certified assistance animal must carry either:
- A Translink Assistance Animal Pass, or
- Written approval from the Sergeant-at-Arms.
