TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
The petition of residents of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the failure to follow due process in banning traditional duck and quail hunting, resulting in: - Conservation being abandoned in favour of satisfying animal rights and welfare activists; - A precedent for ignoring due process - Those conspiring to mislead Government being rewarded rather than punished - Traditional rights of citizens being removed unjustly Your petitioners therefore request the House to: a) Overturn the decision of the Minister of Environment to ban traditional duck and quail hunting; b) Recognise the inherent dangers of any Government process being hijacked by extremists c) Guarantee that the "Smart State's " wildlife management will be based on world's best scientific practice. d) Launch an immediate and transparent inquiry into the process involved to investigate whether the Minister was adequately informed about: - The lack of scientific credibility of the deceptive information relied on by the AWAC in assessing wounding rates; - The need for appropriate stakeholder consultation - The dangers of ignoring ecological consequences - Why the Duck and Quail Management Advisory Committee (D&QMAC), the Government's advisory body was neither consulted nor informed; - The illusion of public support for the ban created through the animal rights activists "form letter" campaign. - The contrived nature of the campaign to progressively ban all reacreational hunting and fishing in Queensland.
