TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the proposed sale by the State Government of Yungaba to Australand. The site was the first entered on the Queensland Estate Register and is now protected by the Queensland Heritage Register. The proposed private development of the property into units will destroy one of Brisbane’s few major heritage listed buildings and sub-tropical gardens and several eight story towers will severely limit the views of the Story Bridge. Sale negotiations were conducted secretly by the State Government after they had committed to a $6M refurbishment of Yungaba as a viable major multicultural venue. The approval by the Heritage Council was granted whilst some Council members were contracted by Australand. The reasons given by The Hon Desley Boyle MP for invoking the “call in” powers are not satisfactory. Your petitioners therefore request the House to: 1. Call a full public inquiry into the reasons for the State Government’s back-flip from its stated action to refurbish Yungaba, the subsequent conduct of sale and approval procedures and the use of “call in” powers; and 2. To suspend the sale process and to engage in proper community consultation about suitable public uses for Yungaba, including full consideration of Yungaba continuing to be used for multicultural purposes.
