TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland citizens draws to the attention of the House to the highly invasive plant known as Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) which is widely sold as an aquarium plant. Once it enters our rivers or lakes, Amazon Frogbit prevents native water plants from growing, reduces light, food, and shelter for native animals such as the platypus, can block waterways and limit recreational activities.

Because this weed is not declared in Queensland, most councils do not have plans in place for its management. Councils such as Logan list it as "causing serious environmental harm", but there no regulation in place for its control as it is not listed as prohibited by the Biosecurity Act 2014.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call on the Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner to investigate the harm caused by Amazon Frogbit. We also call on the house to follow other Australian states and territories and declare this as a prohibited invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014. We call on the house to prevent this invasive plant from being legally sold, propagated, or traded in Queensland.
