TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that the Statutory Warranty had been in place for over ten (10) years in Queensland and had served car buyers well until it was removed in 2014 by the
Premier Campbell Newman lead Queensland Government as part of their decision to reduce red tape.

Previously consumers were protected against costly mechanical defects by a one (1) month/1,000 km Statutory Warranty if these vehicles faulted during that period and were purchased from licensed dealers.

Consumers who purchase older vehicles or those with higher mileages are typically young drivers and those with limited budgets.

These protections have now been stripped away from consumers who are least able to afford to have something go wrong with their vehicles in favour of reducing red tape for licensed dealers.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to reinstate the Queensland Statutory Warranty for vehicles over 10 years old with more than 160,000 km on the odometer for ideally a minimum period of three (3) months or first 5,000 km (the same period as the current Statutory Warranty for vehicles up to ten (10) years old and less than 160,000 km on the odometer before the sale date) or alternatively for one (1) month or first 1,000 km as was previously legislated.
