The petition of citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the following:

We the undersigned, concerned residents of Brisbane and Queensland, have gathered to express our opposition to the scheduled redevelopment of the Regent Cinema, Brisbane.

We express our opposition to unviable and highly limited nature of the cinemas in the proposed development.

We express our desire that the Brisbane City Council, in conjunction with developers and the State Government, immediately review the approved decision which will see the complete demolition of the Showcase Cinema and remains of the original Regent Auditorium Building.

We urge the Brisbane City Council, the developments and the State Government, to ensure that any final development:

  • is a viable, full scale venue for the Arts (cinematic and/or performing), which will remain open to the public in perpetuity;
  • integrates in a meaningful way the retained elements of the Showcase Theatre and bar area, which are in themselves a legacy of the original Regent Theatre;
  • consists of a venue in which the scale and design are in harmony with the original foyer, ticketing area and style of the original theatre.
