The petition of the residents of the Atherton Tablelands draws to the attention of the House that in the past 12 months there have been several accidents on the Tablelands roads including two fatalities.  There is currently a growing emphasis by governments and health professionals on the importance of physical exercise to combat obesity and consequently there are an ever increasing number of recreational bike riders on the Tablelands roads.  As more and more people turn to bike riding, the potential for fatalities and near misses will continue to occur.

This petition calls for this Government to support the erection of signage on Tablelands roads to increase awareness by all road users and the community that bike riders share Tablelands roads.

We therefore request that these signs be erected on all arterial roads and thoroughfares throughout the Tablelands.

We believe that there needs to be a shared respect between bike riders and all road users and we seek to encourage driver awareness through increased signage.
