The Bill

On 16 February 2016, the Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Mr A Lynham, introduced the Mineral Resources (Aurukun Bauxite Resource) Amendment Bill 2016.

The Bill was referred to the Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Committee for examination. The committee tabled its report on 10 March 2016.

The purpose of the Bill is to amend the special provisions in the Mineral Resources Act 1989 that apply to an Aurukun project (the Aurukun provisions). The Aurukun provisions establish a special regime for the assessment and granting of mining tenures for an Aurukun project.

The amendments would require that mineral development licences or mining lease applications for an Aurukun project give communities the opportunity to object to resource projects and have the Land Court consider those objections.
