Surat Basin Rail (Long-term Lease) Bill 2011

On 25 October the Surat Basin Rail (Long-term Lease) Bill 2011 was introduced into the Queensland Parliament by the Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for State Development and Trade, the Hon Andrew Fraser MP.  Subsequently, Parliament referred the Bill to its Industry, Education, Training and Industrial Relations Committee for detailed consideration, setting a reporting date of 19 March 2012.

The Surat Basin Rail (Long-term Lease) Bill 2011 will regulate a lease the Government intends to grant to the Surat Basin Rail Joint Venture, to construct and operate the Surat Basin Rail.   The parties to the Joint Venture are Xstrata Coal, QR National, and ATEC (Dawson Valley Railway) Pty Ltd.  The Bill would provide some exemptions to the Joint Venture from some provisions of the Property Law Act 1974 and the Land Title Act 1994.
