Junior Indigenous Youth Parliament

About the event

Youth Parliament is an exciting opportunity for Year 5 and 6 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to learn more about how Queensland Parliament works. Students will deliver a speech or fill a supporting role in a parliamentary setting.

Cost: Free

Hosted by Queensland Parliament, chaired by Members of Parliament

Open to: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from the state electorate of Cook

 

Students who are allocated a speaking role can:

  • debate a motion,
  • speak in an adjournment debate, or
  • deliver a private members' statement on an issue within the jurisdiction of the Queensland Parliament.

Some students will be allocated a non-speaking or scripted role.

Nominations open in Term 2, 2026 via Humanitix.

The booking link will be published here and an invitation emailed to eligible schools.

 

What next?

2. Teacher briefings

A briefing session for teachers will be held via MS Teams video conference. We will explain more about the event, how to prepare, and answer any questions you may have.

One teacher from each school should attend a briefing session. Dates and times TBA

3. Help your students to prepare

  • Students will need to prepare a one-minute speech to present on the day. We will provide a student information booklet to help you support their preparation.
  • Complete Participant Details and Photo Consent forms by the due date (TBA).
  • Invite students' family, friends and other supporters from your community to attend on the day.
  • Please note, there is no cost for students, teachers, families and other supporters to attend.

4. On the day:

  • Arrive in time to register by 9.00am and be seated ready for the 9.30am student briefing.
  • Each student needs to bring a copy of their speech, printed on A4 paper.
  • A substantial morning tea will be provided for students during the event. School staff and supporters will also be served refreshments including tea, coffee and finger food.
