Referral

On 23 August 2012, Ms Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, Member for Inala, introduced the Multicultural Recognition Bill 2012 into the Queensland Parliament.

This private member’s Bill was referred to the Health and Community Services Committee for detailed consideration in accordance with Standing Order 131 of the Standing Rules and Orders of the Legislative Assembly.

The Committee was required to report to the Parliament by 23 October 2012.

The Bill

The objectives of the Bill are to recognise the diversity of the people of Queensland and the valuable contribution of diverse groups to the Queensland community, to promote Queensland as a united, harmonious and inclusive community and to ensure that government services are responsive to that diversity.

The Bill:

  • establishes the Multicultural Queensland Charter
  • establishes the Multicultural Queensland Advisory Council
  • provides for a multicultural action plan to implement the principles of the charter and the priorities of the multicultural policy
  • requires Chief Executives of departments to ensure staff are aware of the charter and multicultural policy and
  • establishes reporting obligations for departments.
