Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House to ensure that the Department of Housing’s lease at 33 Glen Road Toowong (Atira Toowong building) for Crisis Accommodation is not extended beyond January 2021. Housing in one building up to 300 people with a wide mix of problems is a dangerous social experiment implemented without community consultation, with virtually no community information, and with the following impacts.

  • New record levels of regular criminal and offensive behaviour in the area.
  • The operation is unsafe for those in care and local residents – combining vulnerable domestic violence victims, homeless people, those with mental health issues, people recovering from alcohol and drug dependence, those with current alcohol and drug dependence, and parolees.

Support services provided for those in care are inadequate in Toowong as judged by observed continuing drug and alcohol use, and episodes of violent behaviour in the community.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to ensure the Department of Housing lease on Atira at 33 Glen Road Toowong is not extended beyond January 2021.
