TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the state of disrepair and damage at the site of The Broadway Hotel in Woolloongabba, Brisbane, State Cultural Heritage listing 600354. The hotel has sat vacant since 2010 and has been subjected to weathering and fire damage.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to:
1. Establish a solid regulation with the BCC that ensures cultural heritage protection and enforcement
2. Resolve legislative gaps and uncertainties in the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 to ensure both levels of government take responsibility for heritage protection
3. Take urgent action on the issue to ensure the state and local law meets protection requirements
4. Explain why so many culturally significant sites such as The Broadway Hotel, Lamb House, Red Hill Skate Arena, The Belvedere Building, Walton’s Building, Keating Residence and the Lyceum Theatre have been neglected
5. With specific reference to the Broadway Hotel

  • Issue an urgent ‘Repair and Maintenance notice’ to secure and protect what is left of the building in accordance with s84 of the Act 
  • Disclose the full history of previous enforcement actions and notices issued to the property owner since 2010
  • Explain why past repair and maintenance orders were not enforced
