Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House this petition signed by residents of Herberton and surrounding districts that Baal Gammon Copper Mine are considering using the main street of Herberton as a route to transport copper deposits from its mine at Watsonville.

The main street of Herberton is not constructed to take constant heavy vehicular traffic because of its narrow steep slopes.  Due to the nature and design of the township most of the population is centred within the urban environs and the clamour from huge trucks changing gears and heavy braking will have a detrimental impact on the residents.

The proposed route will see noisy trucks negotiating Poverty Gully with buses, travelling past the hospital and palliative care unit and the safety of pedestrians and boarding school children is a major concern.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call on the Minister for Main Roads to designate an alternative route away from the main street in the interests of safety and quality of life of the people of Herberton.
