Queensland citizens draws to the attention of the House that the regulation of petting zoos/displayed animals is not currently addressed in the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001. There are no standards imposed to ensure these activities meet educational outcomes, safety, humane treatment, Australin Veterinary Association Guidelines or RSPCA requirements. This includes procurement and disposal of animals, accreditation, auditing, provision of veterinary care and professional standards.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to incorporate petting zoos / displayed animals into legislation to give force to the AVA Guidelines, RSPCA guidelines, educational outcomes designed by a suitably qualified educator, veterinary and medical practitioner endorsement of procedures, ensuring adequate funds are held to cover veterinary care, acquisition and disposal processes, auditing by an appropriate body, and record keeping.
