TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland Residents draws the attention of the House to the 'State Facilitated Development' process, which excludes Noosa Shire Council from the decision to approve 195 residential units in Noosa Junction and 40 units in Tewantin village.
Grounds for objection:
- The proposed high-density, multi-level apartment blocks far exceed the size, scale and height of development allowable under the Noosa Plan 2020.
- This adversely impacts Noosa's scenic amenity and is completely out of character with our low-rise, urban development style.
- Compromising Noosa's amenity with high-rise directly threatens our international reputation as a sensitively developed, environmentally aware, tourism destination.
- The State imposing such development on the community disregards Council's existing 'Housing Strategy’ formulated after extensive consultation and expense. Council resolved to address the challenges of housing affordability, without the impact of high-rise development.
- Approving excessive development that fails to consider Council's planning assessment process increases pressure on infrastructure, services and a road network already at capacity.
- The SFD consultation process has been compromised by a lack of detailed information. (e.g. building heights, number of storeys etc). Any approval on this basis sets a dangerous precedent and encourages future inappropriate development applications.
- Considering widespread opposition to these proposals from current and past Mayors, our State MP, and resident/community associations, its undemocratic for the State to force development on a community with a proud history of fighting to preserve its low-rise, urban development profile.
Your Petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to ensure the abovementioned development application is refused.
