Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that residents in regional towns acknowledge the critical need for more social housing options but do not want large, high density, cluster developments in suburban locations.

As an example, a development is being proposed in Toowoomba for 185 social housing and affordable housing units to house 300+ people, which only provides 128 car parks across four, 5 and 6 story towers. The proposal has significant deviations from the town planning scheme and does not fit with amenity and character of the suburban area. The development bypasses local planning by way of the State Ministerial Designation (MID) process and potentially sets a dangerous precedent for all regional towns across Queensland.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all within its power to work with the federal government in consultation with local councils to ensure appropriate and sustainable, smaller developments generally aligned with local planning schemes are evenly blended throughout our communities.
