Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House a request for the State Planning Committee to reject proposed amendments to the Gold Coast city Plan’s targeted/priority growth areas of Biggera Waters, Labrador and Southport West (item 15). City of Gold Coast’s proposed rezoning for this area does not align with state government’s high-density recommendations and these changes will lead to the loss of this culturally rich and historically significant neighbourhood. Large numbers of residents provided feedback to the City of Gold Coast on the proposed plan, all of whom were ignored. This feedback included concerns for the loss of culturally and historically significant homes and trees, narrow streets incapable of managing high volumes of traffic, antiquated sewerage systems already unable to manage demand, lack of public transport, loss of privacy, loss of the current family friendly community, loss of the affordable housing and council’s lack of transparency and professional community engagement throughout the planning process. The latter point on community engagement falls well short of state’s community engagement guidelines as highlighted online. As noted, the areas covered by item 15 fall outside the state government’s high density proposals for the Gold Coast.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call on the state government to reject the Gold Coast City Council’s proposed high density rezoning of Biggera Waters, Labrador and Southport West (item 15).
