TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draw to the attention of the House the proposal by The University of Queensland to demolish the structures known collectively as The University of Queensland Union Complex. These structures include the original student union administration building, the forum area, the refectory, the Schonell Theatre, the relaxation block, the Schonell Pizza Cafe and the student union arcade building, where community radio station 4ZZZ was established and located for 13 years. We contend that, considered as a whole, these structures have cultural heritage significance for the entire state of Queensland and ought to be preserved for the benefit of the community and future generations.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House do all within its power to prevent the university from proceeding with the proposed demolition. In particular, we request that the Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef to exercise her power under Section 154(1) of the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 to issue a stop order to prevent The University of Queensland from undertaking any work that would result in the demolition of the Union Complex. We request that this stop order remains in place until such time as an application to have the structures entered in the Queensland heritage register as a State heritage place has been submitted and determined.
