The Petition of the residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the need of the Queensland government in partnership with the Gold Coast City Council, to ban the schoolies week festival entertainment event from Surfers Paradise CBD for the following reasons: (1) That the Schoolies Week Festival event encourages drunkenness, violence, noise pollution and anti-social behaviour that is destroying the peace and quality lifestyle for the Surfers Paradise community. (2) That the majority of small business traders suffer considerable losses during the Schoolies Week Festival. (3) That the Schoolies Week Festival event has tarnished the genuine domestic and international tourism industry, with damaging media publicity. (4) That the schoolies culture and nightclubs in Surfers Paradise is undermining family values and the moral and ethical character of teenagers. Your petitioners therefore request the House to implement an independent commission inquiry into the conduct and management of the Schoolies Week Festival, nightclubs and Indy culture in Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast region, as an urgent issue of deep concern to the Surfers Paradise Community.
