Report No. 52, 56th Parliament - Summary Offences and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2019

About the Bill

On 19 September 2019, the Hon Mark Ryan MP, Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services, introduced the Summary Offences and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2019.  The House referred the Bill to the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee for detailed consideration. The committee tabled its report on Monday 21 October 2019. The Bill passed with amendment on the 24 October 2019.

The Bill proposes to amend the following legislation:

  • Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000

  • State Penalties Enforcement Regulation 2014

  • Summary Offences Act 2005.    

The explanatory notes provide that the Bill seeks to introduce a range of measures to deter people from using dangerous attachment devices that endanger themselves, emergency services workers and members of the public and to assist police officers in minimising the disruption caused to the community through the employment of these devices.
