Committee's Report

The Committee tabled its Report No. 6 - Domestic and Family Violence Protection Bill 2011 in Parliament on 17 November 2011.

On Thursday, 16 February 2012, the bill was passed by the Legislative Assembly, with Amendments agreed to during Consideration, and the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 came into effect on 17 February 2012, on assent from the Governor. The Explanatory Notes to Minister Hon Karen Struthers' amendments can be accessed from Parliament's Tabled Papers Database.

On 6 September 2011 the Legislative Assembly, on the motion of Hon Karen Struthers MP, Minister for Community Services and Housing and Minister for Women, resolved: 

That the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Bill 2011 be referred to the Community Affairs Committee.

The Bill introduces a new Act to replace the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 1989.

 Submissions

The Committee invited written submissions on the proposals contained in the Bill from all interested parties. Submissions closed on Wednesday 28 September 2011.

Ministerial Briefing:  Tuesday 11 October 2011.

The Honourable Karen Struthers MP, Minister for Community Services and Housing and Minister for Women, provided a verbal briefing to the Community Affairs Committee, on the day before the public hearing. The transcript of the public briefing can be viewed here.

Public Hearing:  12 October 2011.

The Committee held a public hearing at Parliament House to hear from invited witnesses, including the Honourable Karen Struthers MP, Minister for Community Services and Housing and Minister for Women.
