ABOUT THE BILL 

The Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection, Hon Andrew Powell MP, introduced the Environmental Protection and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2014 on 28 August 2014. The Bill was referred to the Agriculture, Resources and Environment Committee in accordance with Standing Order 131.

The committee examined the policies the Bill seeks to give effect to, the Bill’s lawfulness, and the application of fundamental legislative principles, as set out in section 4 of the Legislative Standards Act 1992.

According to the Explanatory Notes, the Bill has the following policy objectives:

• to deliver Greentape Reduction reforms to reduce costs to business and government while maintaining environmental standards;
• to support firm but fair environmental regulation; and
• to promote the recovery and use of waste within the economy.

The Environmental Protection and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2014 was passed with amendments on 28 October 2014.
