Annual Reporting in the Queensland Public Sector

The Public Accounts Committee of the 49th Parliament initiated this inquiry. That committee ceased to exist on the dissolution of the Parliament on Tuesday 23 January 2001.  The current committee was established by the Parliament on 3 May 2001 and at its meeting on 15 May 2001 it resolved to complete the inquiry and report to Parliament in accordance with s 32 of the Parliamentary Committees Act 1995.

The provision of meaningful operational and financial information by government to both Parliament and the public is a fundamental component of the accountability process.  Annual reports are a recognised and accepted means of providing such information. The Financial Administration and Audit Act 1977 requires all departments and statutory bodies to prepare annual reports each financial year and table them in the Legislative Assembly.  The Government Owned Corporations Act 1993 has similar provisions for government owned corporations.

Annual reports are subject to review by the Public Accounts Committee in accordance with its legislated responsibilities.
