Estimates
The estimates process aids the Parliament in its scrutiny of the Government’s proposed expenditure. Since 1994, committees of the Parliament have undertaken the estimates process, by examining and reporting on the proposed expenditures (estimates) contained in the Appropriation Bill and the Appropriation (Parliament) Bill.
In 2021, the Appropriation Bill and the Appropriation (Parliament) Bill will be considered by the 7 portfolio committees (with each committee examining the estimates for their portfolio areas set out in the Bills).
During the estimates process, each portfolio committee will hold a public hearing on a day set by the Assembly (between 16 July and 13 August 2021), at which the Speaker and Ministers (and certain senior public servants and officers) are questioned regarding the proposed expenditures for the relevant portfolio areas. Other Members of the Legislative Assembly who are not members of the committee may also ask questions, with the leave of the committee.
At its public hearing on Friday 30 July 2021, the Health and Environment Committee questioned the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services and the Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef and Minister for Science and Youth Affairs regarding the proposed expenditures for their portfolio areas.
Following the committee’s hearing, the committee members meet, discuss the information gained and compile a final report for tabling in Parliament. The reports are then debated by the Parliament as part of its consideration of the Appropriation Bills.
Current COVID-19 Restrictions – as at 15 July 2021
While the current COVID-19 restrictions for South East Queensland remain in force all persons present at committee proceedings will be required to wear a facemask, to be removed only when speaking during the proceeding.
