Joined his uncles in South Australia c. 1850; Moved to Melbourne and entered pastoral firm Powers, Rutherford & Co; Came to Queensland in 1865 as partner of CB Fisher; Selected and constructed Headington Hill; Extended property holdings to West Talgai, Ellangowan, Retreat and Condamine Plains stations; Was the principal behind Queensland Freezing and Food Export Co.
