Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that the Gold Coast is the tourism capital of Australia and water-based activities are an integral part of the city’s culture.

Fishing charters, whale-watching, scuba-diving tours, sailing charters, jet boating and numerous other water-based activities are important aspects of the Gold Coast lifestyle and holiday experience. They not only create employment opportunities but also provide a source of joy and long-lasting memories for both locals and visitors alike.

However, the Gold Coast’s beloved Marine Tourism on the Spit may soon be destroyed. The impending redevelopment of Mariner's Cove Marina threatens to transform the Spit into a destination for wealthy Super-Yacht owners, forcing out the affordable tourism activities that bring life to the area.

There is currently no alternate location for Marine Tourism to continue its valuable contribution to the community in the Spit area. The Spit has been the home of Marine Tourism for over 30 years and is synonymous with the activity. It is essential a permanent home for Marine Tourism operators is located on the Spit.

Following extensive community consultation, the Spit Master Plan pledged to protect everything Gold Coaster’s love about the Spit, including preserving water-based recreation. The implementation of this Plan is now required urgently to protect access to our natural aquatic assets for future generations.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to support the Marine Tourism Industry on the Gold Coast by helping operators establish a new location for water-based tourism on the Spit.
