Overview

On 11 September 2003, the Legal, Constitutional and Administrative Review Committee tabled in the Parliament a report, Hands on Parliament – A parliamentary committee inquiry into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ participation in Queensland’s democratic processes. The report made 25 recommendations to Government, statutory office holders and political parties about the engagement of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders in democracy.

The Government's response to the report supported most of the recommendations and requested the committee undertake an interim evaluation of strategies implementing the Hands on Parliament recommendations.

For the interim evaluation, the Committee considered whether each Hands on Parliament strategy was practical, workable and directed towards meeting the report’s recommendations, and whether it was achieving meaningful engagement of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders in democracy.
