Overview

The Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee has oversight responsibility of the Queensland Ombudsman.

Pursuant to the Ombudsman Act 2011, the Committee's function is to:

  • monitor and review the performance by the Ombudsman of it's functions;
  • report to the Assembly on any matter concerning the Ombudsman, it's functions or the performance of its functions that the Committee considers should be drawn to the Assembly's attention;
  • examine each annual report tabled in the Assembly under the Act and, if appropriate, to comment any any aspect of the report;
  • report to the Assembly any changes to the functions, structures and procedures of the office of the Ombudsman the Committee considers desirable for the more effective operation of the Act.

Public Hearing

As part of its oversight responsibility of the Queensland Ombudsman, the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee held a public hearing on Wednesday, 21 May 2014 at Parliament House, Brisbane.  A copy of the hearing schedule can be accessed here.

Report

On 12 September 2014, the Committee tabled its Report No. 73, Oversight of the Office of the Queensland Ombudsman. A copy of the report is available here or can be accessed at Related Publications.

As the Committee made a single recommendation for the Legislative Assembly to note the report, there is no requirement for the Government to table a response.
