Overview

The Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee has oversight responsibility of the Office of the Information Commissioner.

Pursuant to the Right to Information Act 2009, the Committee's function is to:

  • monitor and review the performance by the Information Commissioner of it's functions;
  • report to the Assembly on any matter concerning the Information Commissioner, it's functions or the performance of its functions that the Committee considers should be drawn to the Assembly's attention;
  • decide, in consultation with the Information Commissioner, the statistical information agencies and Ministers are to give to the Commissioner for reports to the Committee under section 131;
  • examine each annual report tabled in the Assembly under the Act and, if appropriate, to comment on any aspect of the report and to make recommendations;
  • examine each strategic review report tabled in the Assembly under the Act and, if appropriate, to comment on any aspect of the report and to make recommendations;
  • report to the Assembly any changes to the functions, structures and procedures of the office of the Ombudsman the Committee considers desirable for the more effective operation of the Act.
