Referral

On 16 August 2016, the Hon. Shannon Fentiman, Member for Waterford and Minister for Communities, Women and Youth, Minister for Child Safety and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence introduced the Domestic and Family Violence Protection and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 into the Queensland Parliament.

In accordance with Standing Order 131, the Bill was referred to the Health, Communities, Disability Services and Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Committee for detailed consideration. The Committee was required to report by Tuesday 4 October 2016.

About the Bill

The policy objectives of the Bill, as outlined in the Explanatory Notes, is to:

  • provide victims of domestic and family violence with access to earlier and more tailored protection
  • ensure victim safety is at the forefront of the justice response to domestic and family violence
  • require police to consider how immediate and effective protection can be provided to victims pending a court’s consideration of an application for a domestic violence order (DVO)
  • provide for the automatic mutual recognition of DVOs made in other Australian jurisdictions through the National Domestic Violence Order Scheme (NDVOS), and
  • hold perpetrators of violence more accountable and encourage them to change their behaviour.
