ABOUT THE BILL

The Bill was introduced into the Queensland Parliament on 20 August 2013 by the Minister for Education, Training and Employment. It has been referred to the Education and Innovation Committee for detailed consideration and reporting back to the Parliament by 9 October 2013.

The Bill would amend legislation to strengthen discipline in Queensland state schools by:

  • providing Queensland state school principals with stronger disciplinary powers and more flexibility and autonomy around the making of discipline decisions
  • bolstering the grounds for suspension and exclusion and
  • reducing administrative burdens to enable quick and firm responses to problem behaviour.

Submissions

The committee invites submissions addressing any aspect of the Bill, from all interested parties.  The closing date for written submissions is 5pm on Friday 13 September 2013.

TIMELINE

Public Briefing - 28 August 2013.  The Department of Education, Training and Employment briefed the committee about this bill on Wednesday 28 August 2013. A transcript of the briefing is available here.
