Auditor-General reports referred to the committee for consideration

Overview

Role of the Auditor-General

The role of the Auditor-General is to provide Parliament with independent assurance of public sector accountability and performance. This is achieved through reporting to Parliament on the results of its financial and performance audits.

Referral to Committee

Standing Order 194B provides that the Committee of the Legislative Assembly shall as soon as practicable after a report of the Auditor-General is tabled in the Assembly, refer that report to the relevant portfolio committee(s) for consideration.

The committee is responsible under section 94 of the Parliament of Queensland Act 2001 for assessing the integrity, economy, efficiency and effectiveness of government financial management by examining government financial documents and considering reports of the Auditor-General.

Reports referred to the committee

The Report to Parliament No. 12: 2017-18—Investing for Success was referred to the committee by the Committee of the Legislative Assembly on 22 March 2018.

  • The committee decided during 2018 to postpone its consideration of the report, noting that the Department of Education had accepted all of the Auditor-General’s recommendations, and the timetable for implementation of most recommendations was semester 2, 2019.

The Report to Parliament No. 20: 2016-17—Education and employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people was referred to the committee by the Committee of the Legislative Assembly on 3 May 2018.

  • The Auditor-General’s report had been considered by the committee’s predecessor, the former ETISBC, which had initiated an inquiry that ultimately lapsed on the dissolution of the 55th Parliament on 29 October 2017. The committee considered the activities and information gathered by the ETISBC and resolved not to take any further action in relation to the Auditor-General’s report.

The Report to Parliament No. 15: 2017-18—Education: 2016-17 results of financial audits was referred to the committee by the Committee of the Legislative Assembly on 14 June 2018.
