About the Bill

On 25 October 2011, Hon Rachel Nolan MP, Minister for Finance, Natural Resources and The Arts introduced the Strategic Cropping Land Bill 2011. The Bill was referred to the Environment, Agriculture, Resources and Energy Committee in accordance with Standing Order 131. The committee was required to examine the policies to be enacted by the Bill and the application of fundamental legislative principles, and to report to the Parliament by Monday 21 November 2011. 

The purpose of the Bill is to implement a legislative framework that would:

• protect land that is highly suitable for cropping;
• manage the impacts of development on that land; and
• preserve the productive capacity of that land for future generations.

The Bill amends the Environmental Protection Act 1994 and the Sustainable Planning Regulation 2009.
