ABOUT THE BILL
On 1 September 2016, the Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Minister for Racing and Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Hon Grace Grace MP, introduced the Industrial Relations Bill 2016. In accordance with Standing Order 131, the Bill was referred to the Finance and Administration Committee for detailed consideration.
The objectives of the Bill are to repeal and replace the current Industrial Relations Act 1999. The explanatory notes state that the Bill is to provide for a framework for the conduct of industrial relations within the state’s industrial relations jurisdiction that is fair and balanced and supports the delivery of high-quality services, economic prosperity and social justice for Queenslanders. [Note: Queensland’s industrial relations jurisdiction comprises state and local government sectors and some statutory entities that are specifically excluded from the national system.]
The Bill would also amend the Holidays Act 1983 to make Easter Sunday a public holiday from 2017.
