He was regarded highly by the community and built up a large private practice. Benson was appointed to the Commission of the Peace in 1876. He was the returning officer for Gympie in the 1877 elections. President, Agricultural Society when it was established in 1877. He resigned from government service in 1884 and moved to Melbourne
