Objective of the Bill

The objective of the Bill is to amend the following Acts:

  • Correct Services Act 2006
  • Oaths Acts 1867
  • Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000
  • State Buildings Protective Security Act 1983
  • Youth Justice Act 1992.

The amendments will ensure in each case that, where officers or other persons in a position of responsibility (such as lawyers, Justices of the Peace or Commissioners for Declarations) have a responsibility or need to check the identity of a person, they can insist that the person removes any face coverings that may hamper the recognition of the person.

Identification Laws Amendment Bill 2013

On 8 August 2013, the Member for Nicklin, Mr Peter Wellington MP introduced the Identification Laws Amendment Bill 2013 into the Queensland Parliament. 

In accordance with Standing Order 131 of the Standing Rules and Orders of the Legislative Assembly, the Bill was referred to the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee (the Committee) for detailed consideration. Under Standing Order 136(1), the Committee must report to the Parliament on or before 10 February 2014.

This Bill is similar to the lapsed Identification Laws Amendment Bill 2011 which was introduced by the Member for Nicklin and referred to the former Legal Affairs, Police, Corrective Services and Emergency Services Committee. Information regarding the lapsed Bill can be accessed here.

Report

The Identification Laws Amendment Bill 2013 failed the second reading on 21 May 2014.
