ABOUT The Bill
On 19 June 2012, Hon John McVeigh MP, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry introduced the Animal Care and Protection and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2012. The Bill was referred to the Agriculture, Resources and Environment Committee in accordance with Standing Order 131. The committee will now examine the policies the Bill seeks to give effect to as well as the Bill’s lawfulness and the application of fundamental legislative principles, as set out in s 4 of the Legislative Standards Act 1992.
The committee must report on the Bill by 2 July 2012 in accordance with Standing Order 136(2).
The Bill amends the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 to ensure animal welfare obligations apply to acts done under Aboriginal tradition or Torres Strait Islander custom.
The Bill also make consequential amendments to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities (Justice, Land and Other Matters) Act 1984, the Aurukun and Mornington Shire Leases Act 1978 and the Nature Conservation Act 1992.
