About the Bill

On 17 March 2016 Hon Jackie Trad MP, Deputy Premier, Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning and Minister for Trade and Investment, introduced the Vegetation Management (Reinstatement) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 to the Queensland Parliament.

In accordance with Standing Order 131, the Bill has been referred to the Agriculture and Environment Committee for consideration.

The committee must provide its report to the House by 30 June 2016 (Standing Order 136).

The Bill proposes to amend the Vegetation Amendment Act 1989, the Sustainable Planning Act 2009, the Water Act 2000, the Environmental Offsets Act 2014 to:

• tighten the vegetation management framework for controlling land clearing in Queensland
• limit the clearing of riparian vegetation, especially in the Great Barrier Reef catchments
• reinstate the application of the riverine protection permit framework to the destruction of vegetation in a watercourse, lake or spring, and
• reinstate certain environmental offset requirements
