About the Bill

On 22 April 2021, the Premier and Minister for Trade introduced the Queensland Veterans’ Council Bill 2021 (Bill) into the Queensland Parliament. The Bill was referred to the Community Support and Services Committee for detailed consideration and report by Friday 11 June 2021.

The objective of the Bill is to establish the Queensland Veterans’ Council (QVC) as a statutory body. The QVC would have three areas of responsibility:

  • trustee of Anzac Square under the Land Act 1994 and the ongoing management and operation of Anzac Square;
  • the functions of the Board of Trustees under the Anzac Day Act 1995; and
  • providing advice to government on veterans’ matters.

The Bill provides that the QVC would have a membership of up to eight people (no more than six members appointed by the Governor in Council (‘appointed members’) and two ex-officio members).

The Bill provides that administrative support would be provided by the relevant department (currently the Department of the Premier and Cabinet).
