The Petition of residents of the Surfers Paradise electorate draws to the attention of the House "The Rapid Transit System - Western Route Gold Coast Highway" The 'Western Route" is purely designed around Indy and does not consider the communities' needs. Superior route options were recommended by planners that offer increased benefits to both the community and tourists. Currently these options are not being considered. Unnecessary destruction of local habitat and foreshore, land reclamations, removal of walking tracks and BBQ facilities, installation of highway pedestrian bridges, safety barriers and a level crossing will all be required for the "Western Route" to proceed. Alternative options designed for the community are not being considered, in order (quoting Translink): "To retain the Indy track due to the benefits an event of this stature brings to the region. " The "Western Route" is located on the wrong side of the Gold Coast Highway and offers no direct access to local attractions such as: Main Beach, surf beaches, Sea World, Marine Mirage and Versace, which are open year round. Your Petitioners therefore request that the "Rapid Transit System", be designed for the long-term benefit of the community. It should not be designed solely around a four-day Indy event, which may or may not be on the Gold Coast in the future. Your Petitioners therefore request the House to reject the "Western Route" and for the alternative routes to be put forward to the community.
