TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draw to the attention of the House the concerns of regional Queenslanders about the negative impacts on them of the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.

A successful Brisbane 2032 Olympics bid will cost billions in direct and indirect infrastructure that will likely experience large cost over-runs, blowing out state debt that will increase taxes and levies. Olympic Investment will be concentrated in the south-east and gain priority over regional projects. This priority and urgency will mean higher wages on Olympics projects, leading to a shift of skilled workers from regional Queensland to South East Queensland, meaning slower regional population growth, consequences for regional public project funding, delays in regional projects, and slower regional home price growth or even declines.

Holding minor Olympic events in regional cities will not offset the negative consequences of the Brisbane Olympics. They will not compensate the regions for their enduring contribution to higher state debt; and they will not offset the net economic loss attributed to fewer skilled workers and population declines in regional Queensland locations.

The South East Queensland Olympics will amplify inequality between regions and South East Queensland.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House do all within its power to guarantee regional project delivery, regional skills retention, regional population retention and implement programs to offset the net negative impacts on regions of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. Regional Queensland demands a better deal.
