The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the inclusion of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI) into Translink, for which the main purpose should be the stimulation of economic and social growth in this disadvantaged area. While petitioners welcome the inclusion of the SMBI into the Translink network, they consider the fare reductions proposed are inadequate to achieve the above objectives, nor are they equitable with other fare structures within the Translink South East Queensland (SEQ) area, namely:

  • a higher cost per similar distance travelled elsewhere in SEQ; and
  • more than twice the cost of City Cat ferry services kilometre for kilometre.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to review these arrangements and place the SMBI in zone 8 where they belong geographically and consider reducing the heavy burden of contribution currently required from Redland City Council for the introduction of this service to an integral part of the greater Brisbane metropolitan area.
