TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
The petition of electors of Central West Queensland is opposed to the forced amalgamation of the Jericho, Aramac and Barcaldine Shire Councils and strongly opposes the use of the name "Barcaldine Regional Council" to identify our proposed shire. We believe it was inappropriate for the amalgamated shire to be given a name directly associated with a previous individual shire. Adopting the name "Barcaldine Regional Council" has had a negative impact on the process of merging the three shires. For the amalgamation process to be fair and constructive a new name should have been developed to help create a unique identity for the whole shire. Your petitioners therefore respectfully request the House gives the electors of the three shires an opportunity to vote on a name change, and an opportunity to contribute to the naming of the new regional shire.
