The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that Cocos Palms have been deemed a weed species and an environmental hazard. They pose a risk to native birds and animals, such as flying foxes, and produce copious amounts of fruit which may kill native wildlife, especially if eaten when green. Flying foxes are also likely to die within metres of Cocos Palms if their wings are caught up in fronds.

Flying foxes may also carry Hendra virus, the deadly lyssavirus (similar to rabies virus), and Napih virus, a highly fatal zoonotic disease.

Guano on driveways, roadways and footpaths are a health hazard, particularly to children and pets, as is disposing of deceased wildlife. Flying fox guano may also damages homes and community infrastructure.

Cocos Palms have invasive roots that can get into sewer pipes metres away and can easily lift concrete slabs and retaining walls.

Falling fronds may damage fences and shrubs and injure householders and pets.

Fronds on the ground may attract venomous snakes and block runoff.

Cocos Palms may also attract termites and carpenter ants.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call upon the Minister for the Environment and Tourism and Minister for Science and Innovation, the Hon Andrew Powell MP to:

  • Mandate the removal of Cocos Palms from all urban areas to prevent wildlife deaths, preserve community health and reduce damage to public and private property.
  • Educate the community on safe methods of disposal of deceased wildlife.
