The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House Reason: Communication problems are a key cause of misunderstandings, bullying, domestic abuse and violence. What is the communication skill level within our community? Our community obviously do not communicate at an equal standard. Does everyone know how to speak English and to ask for help? Our communication standards should be reflected in our legislation and taught at every level of schooling. Australia must define the bare minimum of "appropriate civil communication" in different life situations. Dos and don'ts of Australian communication. Is a communication etiquette course needed for all Australians? Maybe it would help.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to create a national communication skills audit of all Australian citizens and residents, starting in Queensland. Determine the skill level and competence of every Australian from every sector of our community, in every age group. Identify those individual persons and groups requiring immediate intervention on their communication skills. Then roll out free communication skills training programs in every community as required. Including providing advocates and support persons where needed.
