The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House our concerns regarding the prevalence of gambling advertising on Queensland Government-owned and controlled public and state assets, including public transport infrastructure and other publicly funded spaces.
Substantial evidence demonstrates that gambling advertising contributes to the normalisation of gambling and increases the risk of gambling-related harm, particularly among children, young people, and vulnerable individuals. Parliamentary inquiries and public health research have found that exposure to gambling promotions is associated with increased gambling participation, financial distress, and adverse mental health outcomes – including suicide. In recognition of these risks, the New South Wales Government has moved to prohibit gambling advertising on state-owned public transport assets, including trains, buses, ferries, and stations, as part of a harm-minimisation approach. Public assets should serve the common good and not be used to promote activities that cause demonstrable social harm.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to:
- Ban gambling advertising on all Queensland Government-owned or controlled public and state assets, including public transport infrastructure, stations, and facilities; and
- Commission a comprehensive review of existing advertising policies and contractual arrangements to ensure alignment with harm-minimisation principles and the protection of vulnerable persons.
