The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the proposed 91-storey Trump International Hotel and Tower in Surfers Paradise. At 340 metres, this project significantly exceeds existing local height and density limits.

We believe a development of this unprecedented scale places an unsustainable burden on local social infrastructure, including transport networks and public utilities. Furthermore, we are concerned that the current approval process fails to account for the long-term strain on public sector resources. We believe the administrative focus and state planning efforts dedicated to facilitating this $1.5 billion private luxury venture are a misallocation of government attention. The height and density of this project threaten the character of the Gold Coast beachfront, a vital public asset for all Queenslanders, and sets a dangerous precedent for state-wide planning.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to direct the planning minister to exercise "call-in" powers under the Planning Act 2016 to independently assess this project.

We ask the House to ensure that state planning priorities are redirected away from high-density luxury commercial ventures and toward the expansion of social infrastructure. We believe the administrative focus and public sector resources currently utilized to facilitate this private development would be better suited to supporting our public institutions, such as health, education, and housing. We request a mandate that any such development be subject to a rigorous Social Impact Audit to ensure it serves the broader interests of the Queensland community over private profit.
